I was going to post this later, but I wanted to add it to the Freebies on the First Linky.  

This is another Write the Room activity for December.  This time students match the color word to the reindeer's nose.

My kids have really enjoyed the new Write the Room Station.  This coming week I'm adding in Christmas Themed  images and words.

Some of the words ARE harder than they can read, but I encourage them to check the first few sounds.  They are pretty easy, but I plan on making them harder (same initial sound, etc.) as the year progresses.

How I use these:

I have 6 laminated strips of paper on the walls around the room.  Each is numbered 1-6.  Students place the recording sheet onto a clipboard and travel to each posting around the room.  They record the correct word, or mixed up sight word, or rhyming word, etc. that they find there.  Then, they draw a picture of the word in the second box.

I've always been really skeptical about Reading and Writing the room.  It's always seemed like a great time for kids to get into trouble doing things that they shouldn't.  I found a way to work in Write the Room that is very structured, and the kids LOVE!

Raki's Rad Resources: Educational Connect 4 Games

I think I love using board games in the classroom as much as Heidi Raki does!  This is a great idea for using Connect Four to add up numbers.  She even has a recording sheet to download!

Other ways you could use this game would be...

1. Record the 4 numbers that won.  
• Put them in order from greatest to least/least to greatest
• Sort them by odd and even
2. Upper grades-Record the 4 numbers that won.  
• Write word form, expanded form, etc.
• Multiply by 4
• Write a story problem using the 4 numbers

I had to look up the requirements for accepting, and one of them is to tell you 7 random facts about myself!

1.  I have 3 blogs and can't keep up with all of them.  They all show different representations of who I am, and also my life long struggle with balancing the different aspects of my life!  :)

Favorite Back to School Activity!

I'm linking up with Fun in First to share my favorite Back to School activity!

My favorite back to school activity has got to be The Blanket Name Game!  I wish I had a picture, but its super easy!! 


Every year this game has been a huge hit!  I've played it at every grade I have taught, from Kinder to Fourth.  It's super easy and a great way to help kids learn each other's names.


Divide the class into 2 sections.
Place an X or sitting spot on the floor on either side of a blanket
Have a helper hold the other side of the blanket up to block the groups from one another
Hold the blanket between the two groups
Each group randomly selects a friend to sit on the X
Count 1, 2, 3 and drop the blanket
ONLY the friends sitting on the X's may call out the opposite friend's name
You can take score, but I don't.
The kids just have so much fun with the anticipation and recognition!
